This is only the second lady slipper orchid I’ve ever gotten to bloom. I like the slippers; they are so exotic looking. I got this one out of bloom at the raffle at our Houston Orchid Society meeting about a year ago. This bloom will probably last about three or four weeks. On this kind of orchid, the bloom stays fresh and beautiful unti the day it just drops off. I guess it does look kind of devilish, doesn’t it? I’d like to see its pollinator.

I forgot to mention, this started blooming late February 2008. I use this website of Emily’s as a record-keeping account of my orchid blooming successes. I have a few more plants blooming right now that we need to add, mostly phals. If you want to see them in person, I’m going to put some of them in the HOS exhibit at the orchid show we’re having in April in the George R Brown. The good thing about phals is that they bloom for about four months, believe it or not.
